Five Common Mistakes in PTE Academic Speaking

Speaking is the most nerve-wracking module of all PTE Exams.

Many people struggle with PTE academic speaking because they lack experience.

It isn’t just about those who don’t speak English fluently.

Low PTE Speaking scores can sometimes shock even native/nearly-native test-takers. Their confidence is affected. Some people even begin to doubt their ability to speak. This situation needs to be viewed logically. It is a computer algorithm that will judge your performance in PTE Speaking. These are some tips to keep in mind as you practice .

The Top 5 Most Common Mistakes in PTE Speaking

#1 Don’t speak too fast

Fluency is not achieved by speaking too fast. Many people mistakenly believe that speaking fast is the key to success. It is believed that it will show their speaking abilities and a high speaking speed. It could be because they are nervous or stressed.

Your fast speech could make it hard for the algorithm. You should speak slowly and not too fast. You won’t lose marks in Oral Fluency or Content if you keep your natural rhythm.

#2 Letting Filler Words Crowd Your Speech

What are filler words then? These words can be sounds like ah’ and uhm’. They also include stalling words such as ‘you know’, “like”, etc.

These filler words are often used in everyday English language usage. These words can reduce your score on an English proficiency test such as PTE. Describe Image or Retell Lecture, you will need to use the preparation before the microphone opens. This is a great time to mentally plan the sentences that you will say.

#3 Use Informal Language

The PTE-Academic exam requires formal academic language, advanced vocabulary, and word structure. You can use casual language within your social circle, but not in the PTE exam. Your vocabulary should be expanded. Practice framing sentences with these words.

#4 Start and Stopping Your Speech

Here’s how it works. Now you are halfway through your PTE Speaking test and have just started a new sentence. You feel the need for more detail and self-correction. You stop the sentence halfway through and start a new sentence. You will lose points in fluency here.

It is best to continue with your sentence in such situations. The next sentence can be used to clarify or add details. This is better than stopping mid-sentence.

#5 Putting the Microphone in the Wrong Place

Short bursts are what we get out of our mouths when we speak. These short bursts of air could be interpreted as unintelligible words in your answer.

You will therefore lose marks.

The microphone should be placed parallel to your nose between the nose and the mouth. The microphone will not be exposed to air pressure from your mouth or nose.

The microphone will capture your speech without recording your breathing sounds. The microphone should not be placed under your nose. Do not touch the microphone.

Conclusion

These tips will help you to practice your PTE Speaking skills. Soon you will be able overcome your weaknesses.
